POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Interrelated Teacher
POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Certified/Licensed
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Special Education
REPORTS TO: Principal/Interlocal Administration
DAYS SCHEDULED PER YEAR: 191 New Teachers 193
1. PURPOSE OF POSITION: Plans,
leads, facilitates, and instructs for maximum student learning in Interrelated
Classroom providing appropriate curriculum to identified special education
students. An Interrelated program
may include students identified in any of the following exceptionalities: Learning Disabilities; Behavioral
Disorders; Mentally Retarded; Multiply Disabled; Hearing Impaired; Visually
Impaired; Other Health Impaired; Traumatic Brain Injured; Autistic; and
Orthopedically Impaired. Meets
established outcomes based on student's individual education plan (IEP) and
capacity to master learning objectives.
Provides activities designed to create interest and enthusiasm for
personal grasp of knowledge.
2. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
a. Plans Instruction:
(1) Participates
as requested on pre-assessment teams to determine necessity for comprehensive
student evaluation.
2) Schedules and attends IEP meetings;
works with multi-disciplinary team to diagnose needs, structure, develop and
implement IEP for each student identified.
(3) Defines, structures and communicates
daily expectations according to IEP including but not limited to course goals,
objectives, learning methods and activities.
(4) Communicates with regular education staff
members on course instructional and mediative strategies and objectives,
students' grasp of material and their outcomes, and perspectives for
applications of materials learned.
(5) Receives and reports grades, in-puts
student data via computer, and negotiates schedules.
b.
Delivers Instruction:
(1) Controls classroom and individual
behavior; adapts and adjusts course content and reading levels to specific
skills to be taught; discerns means of building memory and study skills; and,
assists individual students in achieving learning objectives by working with
them individually and in small groups.
(2) Presents various listening and learning opportunities appropriate to
each student's IEP including but not limited to lecture, VCR, TV, support of
regular classroom teachers, and other presentations and/or opportunities inside
or outside the classroom.
(3) Prepares displays, events, and reinforcement activities which
encourage participation.
c. Evaluates and Communicates:
(1) Plans assessments for evaluation to include but not limited to
various diagnostic techniques: standardized survey and criterion-referenced tests;
teacher developed oral and written tests; student personal indices (effort,
potential, interests, memory).
(2) Designs subject-based reinforcement to follow assessments and
students' learning objectives (computer, lab activities, working independently
or on group projects, field/community reinforcement).
(3) Designs a grading system which encourages motivation and
participation.
(4) Collects and enters data in computer, on charts, from observations
and reports progress in growth and development and results regularly as
required.
d. Manages the Classroom:
(1) Designs classroom rules for student interaction (courtesy and
respect for belongings, space and ideas), self control, working independently,
appropriately gaining the floor, and accepting reminders from teacher; designs
systems for handling all behavior (from simple infractions to severe behavior).
(2) Prepares physical condition of classroom to reflect seasons and
subject matter to facilitate student learning.
(3) Keeps daily records on but not limited to student attendance,
learning and social needs, assignments, assessments and discipline; supervises
paraprofessional(s).
e. Manages
all job duties with the mobility, agility, dexterity and focused observation to
meet job standards of performance.
3. OTHER
DUTIES: (Others may be assigned.)
a. Participates in teacher
committee work and attends teacher meetings.
b. Daily lunch count and lunchroom
duty as assigned.
c. Prepares and/or escorts
students to travel to special classes.
d. Supervises bus loading and
unloading as required.
e. Attends programs and events
related to school.
4. REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Bachelor of Arts or Science in
Elementary or Secondary Education with an emphasis on Special Education. Certified by Kansas State Department of
Education.
5. PERFORMANCE
STANDARDS:
a. Must support district
mission, goals and objectives.
b. Must demonstrate knowledge of
appropriate (elementary or secondary) level; course content; classroom
management; appropriate discipline techniques; ability to work with
multi-disciplinary teams.
c. Must demonstrate ability to
use audio and visual and regular classroom equipment including but not limited
to computer, tape recorder, record player, VCR, TV, overhead projector, and any
applicable adaptive equipment.
d. Must demonstrate skills and
abilities in leadership, planning, communication, coordination,
decision-making, handling emergency situations, patience, imagination,
organization.
e. Must achieve objectives in
the IEP for students' needs and as projected to assist in curriculum and
performance outcomes.
f. Must have a plan for personal
professional growth activities including but not limited to those supplied by
the district; professional growth activities will be evidenced by recorded
efforts to improve classroom management and student achievement.
g. Must meet all district safety
requirements.
h. Performance evaluation performed
annually by Supervisor.
6. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS: As required in policy.
7. WORK
ENVIRONMENT: Moderate environmental conditions and
noise levels. May be required to
wear protective equipment including gloves for exposure control under limited
circumstances.
8. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: The Special Education IR Classroom
teacher will be under the immediate supervision of the Principal of the
building to which assigned, and the direct and final supervision of the
administrators and the Board of the Sedgwick County Area Educational Services
Interlocal Cooperative. This
program is recognized by the State of Kansas as part of the public
elementary/secondary school system which provides services to identified
exceptional students.
