POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

JOB TITLE: Vocational/Special Needs Coordinator              

POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Certified/Licensed                  

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Special Education                

REPORTS TO:   Principal/Interlocal Director                                             

DAYS SCHEDULED PER YEAR: 196  New to Coop 198 Days

 

Position Title:  Coordinator of the Vocational Special Needs Program for special needs students, 14 years-of-age and older, identified in need of vocational assessments and appropriate pre-vocational and vocational training.

 

1.   PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:  To coordinate people, efforts and programs which will result in a workable transition for special needs students from the school into a more independent environment in the community. A Vocational/Special Needs program may include students identified in any of the following exceptionalities:  Learning Disabilities; Behavioral Disorders; Mentally Retarded; Multiply Disabled; Hearing Impaired; Visually Impaired; Other Health Impaired; Traumatic Brain Injured; Autistic; and Orthopedically Impaired.  Meets established outcomes based on student's individual education plan (IEP) and capacity to master learning objectives.

 

2.   ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

      a.    Help direct students in developing more successful pre-vocational and/or vocational skills.

      b.   Help students develop an interest in being successful on the job.

      c.    Help direct students in understanding her/his role within the work place and in dealing appropriately with other employees and supervisors.

      d.    Assist businesses in meeting the needs of their workers.

      e.    Assist teachers in developing and implementing classroom pre-vocational and vocational instructional units.

      f.    Attend meetings held by the Sedgwick County Area Educational Services Interlocal Cooperative #618 Director and/or Assistant Director.

      g.   Develop goals and objectives for Vocational Special Needs Program.

      h.   Write IEP goals and objectives as they relate to transition services for individual students.

      i.    Attend and initiate when needed IEP staffings, job coach meetings and other needed staffings.

      j.    Do vocational assessments and provide results to parents, teachers, employers and social agencies when appropriate.

      k.   The VSN Coordinator shall not transport students in her/his personal vehicles for school/vocational related activities.

      l.    Assure students follow safety rules and regulations on job sites.

      m.  Record, chart, graph and otherwise display data relative to student performance.

      n.   Establish and maintain networking with appropriate social agencies.

      o.   Develop and update a student status report by attending school and by home school attendance centers.

      p.   Develop vocational units of credit guidelines with each district as needed for high school curriculums.

      q.    Develop vocational evaluation and grading forms, procedures and schedules for each district as needed.

 

3.   OTHER DUTIES:  (Others may be assigned.)

      a.    Participates in teacher committee work and attends teacher meetings.

      b.   Prepares and/or escorts students to travel to special classes as required.

      c.    Supervises bus loading and unloading as required.

      d.    Attends programs and events related to school.

 

4.   REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Minimum Bachelor of Arts or Science in Elementary or Secondary Education with an emphasis in Special Education.  Certified/Licensed by Kansas State Board of Education. 

 

5.   PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

      a.    Must support district mission, goals and objectives.

      b.   Must demonstrate knowledge of appropriate (elementary or secondary) level; course content; classroom management; appropriate discipline techniques; ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams.

      c.    Must demonstrate ability to use audio and visual and regular classroom equipment including but not limited to computer, tape recorder, record player, VCR, TV, overhead projector, and any applicable adaptive equipment.

      d.    Must demonstrate skills and abilities in leadership, planning, communication, coordination, decision-making, handling emergency situations, patience, imagination, organization.

      e.    Must achieve objectives in the IEP for students' needs and as projected to assist in curriculum and performance outcomes.

      f.    Must have a plan for personal professional growth activities including but not limited to those supplied by the district; professional growth activities will be evidenced by recorded efforts to improve classroom management and student achievement.

      g.   Must meet all district safety requirements. 

      h.   Performance evaluation performed annually by Supervisor.

 

6.   ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:  As required in policy.

 

7.   WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Moderate environmental conditions and noise levels.  May be required to wear protective equipment including gloves for exposure control under limited circumstances.

 

8.   ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:      The Special Education VSN Coordinator will be under the immediate supervision of the Principal of the building to which assigned, and the direct and final supervision of the administrators and the Board of the Sedgwick County Area Educational Services Interlocal Cooperative.  This program is recognized by the State of Kansas as part of the public elementary/secondary school system which provides services to identified exceptional students.
